Welcome To The Mitchell Junior Mohawks Official Website!
|
The December player of the month has been announced. Please check out who
it is and why they were named on the Player of the Month page.
The climb continues with Mitchell beating Steinbach Friday night in Steinbach.
In a what ended as a convincing 6-2 domination, the team started off shaky,
quickly dropping to a 2-0 deficit halfway through the first period. The game was
tied within a minute of the middle period and from there the goals just kept
coming.
After allowing his sixth goal, including two rifles in the third (one each by
Darren Penner and Chris Stahn), Steinbach's David Grominski bolted from the ice
with his ego in shambles. Back-up goalie Dean Dueck was able to keep the rest of
the pressure out of the net despite also facing multiple power shots, including
one from nearly centre ice that made his glove fly off, setting the puck loose
once again.
Despite the rough start and some adversity throughout the game (two goals
were called off for Mitchell and Randy Morrow got ejected on the basis of too
many stick infractions (the team heavily questioned the calls), never mind the
rough play and constant, clever interference by the opposing team) the team
pulled together to notch yet another win and move up in the standings.
The team is now one point behind first place Red River and one point ahead of
Grunthal after those two teams faced off Friday night (Red River winning) to end
their tie for first place. I suppose one could now say that "all is forgotten" after what some considered a "dismal start to the season."
Now two-thirds of the way through the season, the team is on
the right track and showing the league what good hockey is made of.
On Saturday, Jan. 10 the Mitchell Junior Mohawks will be making a special
presentation to Dennis Neufeld, former arena manager of many years, on behalf of
the community and those who utilize the arena. Dennis helped to first get an
arena in Mitchell, then maintain it on a volunteer basis and eventually managing
it's day to day functions. Dennis was well known to many people, both those in
the community and those that visited for hockey, and has been missed since his
retirement this past summer. We would like to invite everyone to the game to
help honour Dennis as we present him with a plaque for his hard work and
dedication over the years.
Congratulations to Stephen Borkowsky, Nick Plett, Darren Penner, Landon
Klassen and Matt Block. These five players will be representing Mitchell at the
HTJHL All-Star Game in Ile des Chenes on Sunday, Jan. 11. Lorette is hosting
this year's showcase; game time is 3 p.m.
Mitchell juniors have undertaken a new home game tradition this year (at
Saturday games), inviting Mitchell minor hockey players to join in the preskate
and take part in a shoot-out against a Mitchell goalie between the first and
second period. The players also get to join the team in the dressing room just
before the game for part of the "game day speech." So far both initiation and
novice teams have sent three players each to take part, with atom players the
next in line. The final two ice times will be a mix of players and will be
announced the week before the games. Look for the MMHA players on the ice and
cheer them on as they take part in the skate of a lifetime.
UPCOMING GAMES:
Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. versus La Broquerie in La Broquerie
Saturday, Jan. 10 at 8 p.m. versus Steinbach in Mitchell
Thursday, Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. versus Springfield in Mitchell
Thanks,
